Why did the Philadelphia Eagles trade Nick Foles? Exploring what happened to the Super Bowl-winning QB

Nick Foles wrote his name in football folklore when he won the Super Bowl for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018. The quarterback led his team to a stunning 41-33 victory over the New England Patriots and took the MVP award in the big game.

Interestingly, Foles wasn’t even Philadelphia’s first-choice quarterback that season. He was promoted as the starter after Carson Wentz suffered an ACL injury late in the regular season.

Despite leading the Eagles to an exceptional playoff run and their first Super Bowl title, the team traded Foles the following season.

Many believed Philadelphia would smack Foles with its franchise tag to keep him on the team. The Eagles also announced on January 19, 2019, that they would choose the $20 million option on Foles’ contract.

However, the quarterback informed Philadelphia that he would void the option, making him a free agent. Foles was reportedly interested in playing football as a starter.

The unceremonious split between the Eagles and Foles led to the quarterback signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the offseason.

Nick Foles was taken by the Philadelphia Eagles in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He earned Pro Bowl honors in 2013, but after a disappointing season in 2014, he was traded to the St. Louis Rams.

The quarterback struggled in St. Louis and was released after just one season. He spent the next year as a backup for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Foles returned to the Eagles in 2017 and helped Philadelphia to its first Super Bowl title in 2018.

He opted out of his contract with the Eagles in 2019 to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, he suffered an injury in the season opener that forced him to miss most of the season.

Foles was traded to the Chicago Bears in 2020 and spent two seasons with the team. In 2022, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts as a backup.

Throughout his NFL career thus far, Nick Foles has thrown for 14,227 yards and 82 touchdowns on 1,302 passes.
