While each team is sharply focused on achieving its goals as the NCAA season winds down, the recruiting process never stops in college basketball. One player who has caught the attention of top programs is Tre Johnson.
The Lake Highlands (Dallas) product has risen to No. 1 in ESPN’s rankings for the recruiting class of 2024. Last season, he averaged 23.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists while guiding the Wildcats to a record 32- 5. The 6-foot-5 guard has raised the bar even higher with his impressive scoring ability this season.
Where will Tre Johnson land?
As the best recruit in the country, Tre Johnson gets to choose where he wants to play college basketball.
According to 247sports, he has received offers from Kentucky, Baylor, Texas, Duke and Arkansas. ESPN also reports that Miami, Gonzaga, North Carolina, LSU and Duke have also awarded scholarships. Arizona, Auburn, Florida State, Kansas and Texas Tech are also in the mix.
Johnson has made official visits to Kentucky, Baylor and Texas. The Kentucky coaching staff has also been a frequent visitor to his games.
What sets Johnson apart is his advanced offensive skill set. He fits perfectly into modern basketball, as he is capable of scoring on all three levels and has a range that extends well beyond three-point range. Johnson is a catch-and-shoot while he possesses the ability to create on his own. He is also expected to grow a few more inches.
The biggest area of play that he has worked to improve is on the defensive end. Johnson entered the season having scored over 1,000 points at the high school level, but showing that he can do it on both sides of the ball raises the bar for him even higher. Answering this call has clearly worked as evidenced by his growth in the rankings.
Wherever he lands, there is sure to be a bright future for the Texas native. He is an elite goalscorer who plays with a chip on his shoulder and isn’t afraid to let opponents know when he feels it. He expects him to provide a big boost to any college that lands him, and the recruiting process for him will be one to monitor.
