KYIV (Reuters) – Ten people, including two children, were killed and 52 injured on Sunday night when a Russian missile hit a nine-story residential building in Ukraine’s northeastern region of Sumy, emergency services and the military said. from Ukraine.

“Sunday afternoon for the city of Sumy turned into hell, a tragedy that Russia brought to our land,” Volodymyr Artyukh, head of the Sumy military administration, said in a post on the administration’s Telegram messaging channel.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said on Telegram that first responders and all necessary services continued to work at the scene and that psychologists were providing assistance to those affected.

More than 400 people were evacuated, the Service added.

Images posted on the Service’s Telegram showed firefighters fighting a fire that consumed cars and rescuers removing people from a building. One photograph showed a multi-story building with almost all the windows broken and the façade damaged.

Reuters could not independently verify the Ukrainian reports. There was no immediate comment from Moscow.

Both sides deny targeting civilians in each other’s territory. But thousands of people have died since early 2022 in the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the vast majority of them Ukrainians.

The attack on Sumy came after a morning in which Russia attacked Ukraine’s power grid in what kyiv said was a “massive” attack with 120 missiles and 90 drones that killed at least seven people.
