Troy Aikman spoke about his opening as Cowboys head coach on Monday Night Football after the franchise decided to move on from Mike McCarthy and his evaluation was brutal. He suggested that there appears to be no coherent plan from Jerry Jones, as they have let the incumbent walk away without interviewing other candidates. The Hall of Fame quarterback mentioned some people like Kellen Moore, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn and said:
“It suggests there’s no real plan. The fact that they haven’t had a chance to interview maybe Ben Johnson and some of these others, Aaron Glenn. Kellen Moore being a candidate, it makes sense to me. He’s a guy who’s familiar with the building. “He obviously worked with the Cowboys, with Jerry Jones and they know each other very well.”
Troy Aikman also criticized whether or not the Cowboys vacancy is coveted at this point. He acknowledged the high-profile nature of the franchise, but said it might not be the most attractive vacancy for potential head coaches. He explained it by saying that most candidates would want to do this job on their own terms and that’s hard to do in Dallas, and commented:
•
“As far as a coveted job, I don’t know if that’s accurate. I think the Cowboys are obviously a high-profile team and whoever the head coach of that team is will certainly get a lot of attention, but I think most “Football players who take on the role of head coach want to do it on their terms, and that is difficult to achieve.”

Cowboys HOF Troy Aikman takes a cue from Dan Campbell to make his point after Mike McCarthy’s firing.
Troy Aikman further made his point by taking the example of Dan Campbell, who has had so much success as a head coach in Detroit. He said he may not be able to get the same results in Dallas, noting:
“If you take Dan Campbell, for example, it’s Dan Campbell (in Detroit) Dan Campbell if he’s with the Dallas Cowboys. It’s hard to imagine he is. It’s hard to imagine a lot of these coaches could be. I love the Dallas Cowboys. “I played there for 12 years. I wish them the best, but to say it’s a coveted job, I’m not sure I necessarily agree with that.”
It was a damning critique of the current-era Cowboys from a man who did as much as anyone to make the franchise great.
