The 82nd Golden Globes will honor Hollywood’s best and brightest tonight. But as always, film and television fans are in for some really shocking stuff.
This year’s list of honors serves to remind us what an impressive year this has been in the world of film and TV.
But the downside of so much great content is that many worthy performances – who might have been nominated in any other recent year – have been overlooked by the Globes organization.
Here’s our list of the most surprising snubs of 2024:
Lady Gaga – ‘Joker: Folie A Deux’
Fans had high expectations from the 2019 sequel JokerA surprise box office success that earned Joaquin Phoenix his first Academy Award.
Alas, Phoenix and director Todd Phillips weren’t able to capture lightning in a bottle.
Not only did the sequel flop in theaters, but both Phoenix and costar Lady Gaga were snubbed by the Globes.
Gaga did all she could with the lame material, and she soared during some of the film’s musical numbers. But overall neglect (joker 2 was eliminated in every category) is another in a long line of embarrassments for a film that was cursed from its very concept.
Ryan Reynolds – ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’
Superhero performances don’t usually make much of a splash during awards season.
But Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool has beaten the odds in the past. When Ryan first wore the red leather mask in 2016, he was nominated for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.
However, this time around, Globes voters were less impressed.
Reynolds and costar Hugh Jackman were both overlooked and the film received only one nomination for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
Now in its second year, the category honors the most popular films of the year. We thought millions at the box office would be reward enough, but what do we know?
Meryl Streep – ‘Only Murders in the Building’
With three Oscars, three Emmys, and nine Golden Globes, Mary Streep is having no trouble at all for awards season recognition.
In fact, he may be relieved that he won’t need to free up any more space on his trophy shelf.
Still, Merrill was despised for his work. Only murders in the building Sting, if only because the screen legend deserves recognition for doing top-tier work in a rare comedic role.
Jonathan Bailey – ‘Wicked’
No one was surprised by this news Wicked Scored big with four nominations, including Best Musical or Comedy, Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy (Cynthia Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress in a Musical or Comedy (Ariana Grande).
But the beloved musical received some surprising snubs as director Jon M. Chu was not nominated and Jonathan Bailey was overlooked for his work as Fiyero Tigelaar.
British stage and screen veterinarian – best known for his work bridgerton – stole almost every scene he was in (that’s no easy feat among such talented costars), but as we said earlier, it was an unusually packed year in terms of acting talent.
We’re sure Bailey has years of accolades to offer, but this insult is still out there Wicked Fans are abusing Globes voters.
Saoirse Ronan – ‘Blitz,’ ‘The Outrun’
Then there’s Saoirse Ronan, who faced double the criticism for her performance the Blitz And move on,
On paper, both roles (a mother enduring the London Blitz and an alcoholic who finds redemption by working with endangered birds) sound like nonsense to Globe voters.
But neither film made much of a splash among critics, and thus, Saoirse (who won the 2018 Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy) lady bird) may be forced to endure a rare nomination-free awards season.
We are sure she will be back next year.
Michael Keaton – ‘Goodrich,’ ‘Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice,’
Completing the list is another double cheat.
Michael Keaton had one of the best years of his career with stellar performances in both long-awaited films Beetle Juice Sequels and little-seen indie dramas goodrich,
Sadly, it looks like this beloved Hollywood legend is yet another victim of an acting embarrassment this year.
Always a good sport, Keaton may have attended tonight’s ceremony anyway.
One of the nominees must say their name three times!
Hosted by Nikki Glaser, this year’s Golden Globes airs tonight on CBS.
