Could the Las Vegas Raiders and Derek Carr be one step closer to finalizing a trade involving quarterback Derek Carr?

NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the New Orleans Saints invited Carr for a visit Wednesday as the quarterback hits his Feb. 15 deadline with the Raiders.

Rapoport tweeted:

“Sources: The #Saints invited quarterback Derek Carr for a visit and the #assailants They have given permission for that to happen. The plan is a visit tomorrow. Carr, who has a no-trade clause, is doing his due diligence and no trade is imminent.”

This is the first known team that is interested in acquiring Carr. He has a no-trade clause, so he could deny any deal for him. But with him scheduled to visit New Orleans on Wednesday, there seems to be some mutual interest.

The Saints recently acquired a late first-round pick from the Denver Broncos via the Miami Dolphins. With the added leverage of having two first-round picks, it could get other teams interested in Carr to act quicker, as the Raiders hope to move Carr before Feb. 15.

I can confirm this. He #assailants and Saints have not agreed to a trade for Derek Carr, but this provides an opportunity for New Orleans and Carr to investigate each other. That could potentially open the door for a deal to happen. twitter.com/rapsheet/statu…

New Orleans Saints quarterbacks Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees retired after the 2020 season.

The team has had Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton, Trevor Siemian, Ian Book and Taysom Hill playing quarterback since Brees retired, and none of the five appear to be their franchise.

Between the five of them, they’ve gone 16-18 over the past two seasons and haven’t made the playoffs since Brees was there. Carr finished the past two seasons with a combined 16-16 record with one playoff appearance in 2021.

Dalton and Winston have mostly split the starting job, with Winston making 10 starts over the past two seasons and Dalton 14.

At this point in their careers, Carr may be a slight upgrade from what the Saints currently have. It’s unclear what the compensation will look like and whether Saints and Carr will restructure their contract.
