Manchester United ended their six-year trophy drought by beating Newcastle United 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday (February 26). A Casemiro header and Sven Botman’s own goal sealed victory for the Red Devils.
Newcastle fans flooded London that day, hoping to win their first major trophy since 1955. However, Erik ten Hag’s side continued their remarkable season under his watch and were relentless on attack.
Their first goal came in the 33rd minute after they came under early pressure from the Magpies. Luke Shaw finished off a dangerous free kick and Casemiro cleared it.
Manchester United’s second came in the 39th minute. Marcus Rashford smashed the ball into Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius’s goal. The Dutch defender slid and the ball deflected over his goal and into the back of the net.
The Red Devils were booked into the second half, holding on to their 2-0 lead and holding off Eddie Howe’s men. United goalkeeper David de Gea sprang into action on 72 minutes and reacted magnificently to deny Callum Wilson a touch. Joelinton also came close in the 92nd minute, but De Gea parried the shot away from him.
Fernandes had a chance in the same minute at the other end. He got into a good one on one position with Karius. However, he ignored Casemiro’s run and fired straight at the German.
It didn’t matter as Manchester United won the Carabao Cup with a challenging victory over Newcastle. Ten Hag is overseeing a season to remember for his side.
One fan thinks the Red Devils could be on their way to winning three more trophies:
“Quadruple Outstanding”
Meanwhile, another is in love with Ten Hag:
“WE WON A TROPHY I’M CRYING REAL TEARS ERIK TEN HAG YOU HAVE SHOCKED MY WORLD.”
Here’s how Twitter reacted to a Ten Hag masterclass at Wembley when the Red Devils finally got their hands on a trophy again:
Casemiro’s promise before joining Manchester United comes true
Manchester United were in a dark place before Casemiro arrived from Real Madrid last summer. They suffered two losses in their opening games of the season.
The Brazilian hadn’t even landed in Manchester before he enthused the fans about the possibility of one of the best midfielders joining the club. He reportedly texted a representative after watching the Red Devils fight:
“Tell them I’ll fix this.”
Since then, Ten Hag’s team has been in remarkable form, winning 27 matches. This is the most of any club in all of Europe. They have not only won the Carabao Cup. The Red Devils are still alive in three other competitions. The Brazilian has been instrumental, making 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing four assists.
