The Avalanche won their third championship and their first since 2001 when they ousted the two-time defending champion Lightning.

The Lightning, who joined the NHL in 1992, were seeking their fourth Cup (Tampa Bay won their first title in 2004).

The Avs, formerly the Quebec Nordiques before moving to Denver for the 1995 season, have previously won the Cup in 1996 and 2001.

Colorado, captained by Gabriel Landeskog, won twice in overtime in the series.

Defender Cale Makar, who scored 29 points in 20 playoff games, was voted the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as his team’s Most Valuable Player during the postseason.
