Mindy Kaling is a proud single mother of three kids — but who is the kids’ father?
It’s one of the biggest mystery stories in modern Hollywood, and at a time when it shouldn’t even be happening.
But Mindy’s special interest in kids stems from her long-standing romance with Office co-star B.J. Novak.
Fans of the show can’t seem to shake the notion that he could be the father of her children.
But what evidence do they have? Let’s take a look at it.
Mindy Kaling’s kids and their dad: Is it B.J. Novak?
When Mindy Kaling welcomed her first daughter in December 2017, she refused to reveal the identity of the child’s father.
So it’s no surprise that fans jumped to the conclusion that B.J. Novak is the baby’s father.
In fact, many were pretty sure that the Scranton branch’s third or fourth most popular couple had entered the world of parenting at the same time.

But still, Mindy kept quiet about her daughter’s father.
Mindy’s Growing Family
Time went on, people moved on (somewhat), until their son was born in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic! The pregnancy was a secret, of course, helped by the fact that the world was locked in their homes.
And again, Mindy dodged the question of who the father of both of her children was. Fans began to pick up on the issue, analyzing everything Mindy said about their relationship in interviews and in her writing.
“I’ll be frank — my relationship with B.J. Novak is super weird. He’s not my boyfriend, but he’s not my best friend either,” Kaling revealed.
“I guess you could describe our relationship as ‘romantically charged camaraderie with vigorous debate,’ but I don’t think Facebook would accept that as a new status quo.”
In her memoir written in 2015, Kalinga said Office Fans were overjoyed when he revealed that he and Novak refer to each other as each other’s “soup snakes,” a reference to a Season 7 episode in which Michael Scott intended to use the term “soul mates” and only used it that way, incorrectly.
“Your goal is a ‘soul mate,’ but sometimes all you get is a soup snake,” Kaling wrote.
Mindy welcomes third child
The mystery of who is the father of Mindy Kaling’s children was revealed again in June 2024, when Mindy announced that she had welcomed another daughter to her little family four months earlier!
Yep, another secret pregnancy (she’s getting quite adept at this!) and renewed interest about who the father might be.
Again, no name other than B.J. Novak has been mentioned as often, despite the fact that in 2022, Mindy finally addressed the rumors directly.

“If that’s what’s going to get people excited, then I’ll accept that,” she said of protecting her children’s privacy, “I want them to be old enough to talk to me about it and [tell me] They want me to talk about it. I’m the sole guardian of my children. … I think I prefer to be very careful so that it’s not something that they’ll be angry at me for later on.”
