Countless wildfires are burning in Los Angeles County. Unfortunately, the destruction continues, with new fires emerging – and millions of people living in a state of fear amid the chaos.

Mandy had to evacuate her neighborhood because the Eaton Fire – one of several, and about 30 miles east of the Pacific Palisades Fire – put her and her family at risk.

On January 8, she expressed her heartache on Instagram, beginning with: “I love you, Altadena.”

Along with Mandy’s caption, they showed footage of local buildings engulfed in flames. No news footage – just video recorded on phone. Every disaster is just a video on someone’s phone unless it’s recorded on your own phone.

“Grateful to get my family and pets out before it was too late last night,” he said. “(And eternal gratitude to the friends for taking us in and bringing us clothes and blankets).”

Mandy’s family includes 3-year-old Gus Harrison, 2-year-old Ozzie Bennett, and 3-month-old Lewis Everett, all of whom she shares with husband Taylor Goldsmith.

People have lost a lot, including Mandy Moore and her family

“Honestly, I am shocked and appalled at the loss of so many people, including my family,” Mandy Moore wrote.

“My kids’ school is gone,” she said. Many schools were burnt to ashes. “Our favorite restaurant, flat.”

He added, “So many friends and loved ones have also lost everything.” As the disaster continues, the ultimate loss – death, destruction, and more – is impossible to know. Even missing days, weeks, and months of work can derail people’s lives.

These ‘worst ever’ disasters aren’t going away any time soon

People in Los Angeles are facing the worst wildfire in the county’s history. This is saying a lot. Unfortunately, the record will almost certainly be broken.

Just as “storm of the century” storms now occur every few years, these wildfires are becoming more common and more destructive. Climate change makes everything worse. As a society, we can make things better – or continue to allow these disasters to escalate.

Los Angeles residents aren’t the only people who have experienced a record-setting disaster over the past few months. He won’t be the last to do so this year.
