As you’ve surely heard by now, Southern California has been devastated by the most devastating wildfire in the region’s history.
Thousands of homes have been destroyed and at least ten people have died as firefighters work around the clock to contain the historic disaster.
Countless celebrities have been forced to evacuate as fires spread through some of the region’s most famous neighborhoods.
Kardashian forced to leave amid Kenneth’s fire
Among the stars forced to flee their multimillion-dollar homes are members of the Kardashian family, who fled Calabasas Thursday night ahead of the worsening Kenneth Fire.
According to a new report from TMZ, Kim Kardashian and her entire family followed mandatory evacuation orders just before the flames quickly spread to 1,000 acres in a matter of hours.
Kardashian also donated hundreds of meals to local firefighters, so she’s clearly grateful for the people who are risking their lives to keep them safe.
So why is Kim being criticized on social media and accused of turning a blind eye to the devastation in his hometown?
kim lives to sell
As you probably know, Kim is a billionaire largely because of her Skims fashion line.
She promotes the brand tirelessly on social media and naturally, she works with a team of professionals to spread the word about sales and new products.
So it should come as no surprise that the brand has continued to post about its latest offers on Instagram.
But for reasons that are not entirely clear, many commentators are outraged by this display of unfettered commerce.
A recent post on the Skims page reads, “Winter Sale starts tomorrow.”
“Set your alarm to shop the first major event of the year with up to 50% off your favorite SKIMS collections.”
The ad was met with a surprising amount of outrage in the comments.
Kim faced criticism
“How about making a post of running resources in LA and what Kim and Skims are doing to help!!” one person commented, according to Page Six.
“Still trying to get money out of people during the massive fire,” said another.
“Post about the fire you guys are ruining the brand with,” a third wrote.
A fourth replied: “So posting this RN being indifferent to skims.”
“@skims who cares about stupid sales. Pack up money and underwear and deliver it to people who need help in LA,” chimed in a fifth.
Another critic seized the opportunity to praise Khloe Kardashian for posting resources and information about the fires.
“What about California? You only care about yourself and money! Khloe is the realest so I love her SM,” this person wrote.
Thankfully, Kim had some defenders, many of whom pointed out that she almost certainly didn’t schedule the post herself. Many also said that she is a mother of four in the grip of a potentially life-changing crisis.
“She’s also in the middle of a traumatic event, have some empathy,” one commenter wrote.
“Shut up all of you, this is a business. The show will go on. Kim is mourning like everyone else and praying for her city,” another user said.
Because we live in the age of discourse, in a few weeks, there will surely be a big debate over which celebrity Angeleno had the best and worst reaction to the fire.
But perhaps we should all stop, take a breath, and remind ourselves that these are all human beings facing an unimaginable disaster.
