Justin Timberlake has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence following his arrest in Long Island, New York in June this year.
The musician appeared with his attorney, Edward Burke Jr., for a hearing in Sag Harbor City Court on Sept. 13 after reaching a settlement in his DWI case.
According to this plea agreement, Timberlake must complete 25 to 40 hours of community service with a non-profit organization of his choice … and pay a $500 fine.
The singer will also have to issue a public safety declaration.
Timberlake, who performed on stage and spoke to fans about the incident just days after his arrest, also addressed reporters this afternoon.
“Many of you have been covering me for most of my life, and as you may know, I try to hold very high standards for myself,” Timberlake said at a news conference outside the courthouse.
“It wasn’t like that. I found myself in a situation where I could have made a different decision, but I had some time to think about it.”
The artist also told the court that he would “like to take a moment to express his gratitude to everyone involved” and said that since he grew up in a small town, he understands the “pressure this puts” on local resources.
Timberlake was charged with driving under the influence in the Hamptons just before the official start of summer.
The former boy band member was held in police custody overnight ahead of an arraignment hearing, where he was charged with a DWI and two traffic violations.
He was released on personal bail the next day.
Based on the arrest report, an officer allegedly observed Timberlake’s 2025 BMW drive through a stop sign, and “failed to stay on the right side of the road.”
When the officer initiated the traffic stop, he observed that Timberlake’s “eyes were red and glassy, his breath smelled strongly of alcohol … and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.”
During a previous hearing, the superstar’s license was also suspended for a year in New York State after he refused to take a breath test when he was taken to police headquarters following his arrest — something his lawyer said is “standard with every DUI.”
Following Timberlake’s statement in court on Friday, the judge questioned the artist’s “intentions” and told J.T. that he hadn’t yet said anything directly regarding his decision to drive when he could have taken a taxi or used a rideshare app.
Timberlake responded, “I found myself in a situation where I should have paused.”
“I should have exercised better judgment. I understand and appreciate the seriousness of this.”
