JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM) Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon has called for federal employees in Washington, D.C., to return to their offices, highlighting the ongoing debate over remote work policies.

What happenedSpeaking at the Atlantic Festival, Dimon expressed frustration with the number of vacant buildings in the capital, Business Insider reported Friday.

“By the way, I would also get Washington DC working again. I can’t believe that when I come here, the buildings are empty. The people who work for you don’t go to the office,” he said.

“That bothers me,” he added. Dimon stressed that he does not allow such flexibility at JPMorgan.

Don’t miss:

Why it is important: Dimon is not alone in his stance. Earlier this week, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) CEO Andy Jassy announced that Amazon employees would return to the office five days a week, returning to pre-pandemic norms.

JPMorgan’s policy requires CEOs to be in the office full time, while other employees must work in person at least three days a week. Last year, the Biden administration also pushed federal employees to return to in-person work.

Despite these efforts, many federal workers still have flexible work arrangements. For example, some Environmental Protection Agency Employees are required to be in the office only four days a month. Other agencies, such as the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Interior Occasionsrequire at least 50% office presence.

According to CBRE, office vacancy rates in DC remain high: in the second quarter of 2024, approximately 22% of office space was vacant. Federal government and private sector offices contribute to this trend.
