Ivanka Trump is creating a stir without saying anything.
On Monday, January 20, Donald Trump created history by taking oath as the US President.
Now, a famous fashion house that once dressed like Jacqueline Kennedy has – in the eyes of many – diminished its legacy by doing the same to Ivanka.
Who dressed Ivanka Trump for the inauguration dinner?
Oscar de la Renta died in 2014 after a battle with cancer. The single designer’s eponymous fashion house is operational.
The same house also lined up Ivanka Trump for the inaugural dinner with the controversial former (and now, current) president before he takes office again on January 19, 2025.
Oscar de la Renta (fashion brand) not only dressed Ivanka for the occasion, but also showcased his work on Instagram.
The fashion house discussed dressing Ivanka in a “custom off-the-shoulder crystal and pearl floral-embroidered empire waist gown with a silver stole.”
As you can imagine, the reactions from the page’s countless followers varied greatly.
“Oh ok so we’re done with ODLR,” one commenter wrote. “ODLR sold its soul,” wrote another, followed by the simple words: “Unsubscribe.”
Another Instagram user lamented, “Sad for this to happen to ODLR.” Another agreed in less words: “This is not the House’s proudest day.”
Other commentators said that the Oscar de la Renta fashion brand has “lost it.” Others said it was “disgraceful” to be associated with the Trump crime family in this way.
An additional Instagram user wrote: “Probably unfollow after 8 to 10 years. Loved your content but this is unacceptable. goodbye.”
And this was not an isolated incident. Earlier the same day, Ivanka Trump wore a brown outfit for the wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Oscar de la Renta displayed the photographs with obvious pride. Commentators condemned the fashion house for “dressing these people”.
“Oops. No. We’re not going to normalize any of this. Unfollowed,” one critic announced. Many other people also had similar opinions.
Is it really that surprising?
Obviously, longtime fans of fashion and the Oscar de la Renta brand in particular have every right to express their feelings of disgust and betrayal.
Even though Ivanka Trump has made a point of avoiding serving as a political prop for most of this campaign, that was not true eight years ago. And in this case, she was attending her dad’s formal events, not taking her child to a Taylor Swift concert. This is not apolitical.
The overlap between the worlds of fashion and politics has long been a source of controversy.
As many have noted, Hugo Boss designed uniforms for the SS. Coco Chanel herself was a Nazi informer.
Now, Oscar de la Renta finds itself at the center of a heated controversy. The brand has yet to publicly respond to today’s response,
