Former WWE head writer Vince Russo has commented on the King of the Ring and how important he was back in the day.
In 1996, Stone Cold Steve Austin won the tournament, delivered Austin’s 3:16 speech, and went on to become one of the greatest superstars of all time. Other memorable winners include Triple H, William Regal and Booker T. The last person to don the crown and royal robes in the company was Xavier Woods, who won the tournament in Saudi Arabia in 2021.
Zelina Vega won the inaugural women’s tournament to become WWE’s first official queen. On RAW this week, it was announced that the King and Queen of the Ring premium live event will take place in Jeddah on May 27.
In the last edition of Sportskeeda Wrestling RAW LegionVince Russo shared that winning the King of the Ring tournament was a big deal back in the day, comparing it to winning the Royal Rumble.
“It was really, I mean, it was a great pay-per-view back in the day. King of the Ring was a great pay-per-view. So it was like a guy who wins the Royal Rumble, just someone who’s going to getting pushed is going to be the King of the Ring,” Russo said. [1:00:06-1:00:20]
