Donald Sutherland has died after enjoying a long career in Hollywood despite suffering from a number of illnesses over the years. He was 88.
Donald, the father of TV star Kiefer Sutherland, was known worldwide for his roles in MASH, Pride and Prejudice And The Hunger Games Voting rights.
His image glowed on the screen, while in private he struggled with everything from polio to rheumatic fever and hepatitis.

His near-death experience in the 1970s
It was almost impossible to live to the age of 80. In an interview in 2012, Donald revealed that in 1970 he had spinal meningitis, which left him clinically dead for four seconds.
“I got sick in the middle of shooting ‘Kelly’s Heroes.’ I came to Yugoslavia for one day of shooting and was out for six weeks,” the actor explained in the interview.
“They took me to the hospital – I had spinal meningitis.
“They didn’t have antibiotics, so I went into a coma, and they told me I died for a few seconds.”
Thankfully, he didn’t, which gave him time to build a career that’s earned him a Primetime Emmy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Critics’ Choice Award.
Sadly, he was one of the best actors to never receive an Academy Award nomination. Thankfully, he was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2017.
His family, which includes his four other children – three more sons and a daughter – will hold a private celebration of life in Donald’s honour at a later date. No official funeral details have been provided yet.
