Dave Grohl is a divorced man. The question is, will he be a divorced man again?
In a shocking Instagram post, the Foo Fighters rocker admitted to the world that he cheated on his wife of more than 20 years. To make matters worse, the affair resulted in a love child.
This story might sound familiar to those who have followed Dave’s career since his Nirvana days. For the rest of us, it’s important to point out that Dave Grohl knows all too well what happens when you cheat on your spouse: divorce.
How much of their married life is going to be repeated? Let’s take a look at this.
Dave Grohl divorce: His first marriage ended very badly
Imagine this: 1994. That’s the year Dave Grohl married his first wife, Jennifer Youngblood.
His last name says it all. Dave was only 25 at the time. He was still with Nirvana and his friend Kurt Cobain had recently died.
In later years, Dave admitted in an interview that he was too young to get married. Perhaps this is why their relationship broke up in 1997.
But the story does not end here.
There are conflicting reports about the reasons for the two’s split, with one prevalent theory being that she cheated on him. For his part, Dave insisted the split was amicable.
“I was 25, my wife was even younger. We weren’t ready for marriage,” he once told NME. “I miss her so much, she’s the funniest and weirdest person you’ll ever meet in your life. Absolutely lovely. It would have been better if we hadn’t gotten married. But you live and learn.”
Their first divorce broke up the band
It turns out that Dave Grohl’s divorce had bigger ramifications than just paperwork and dividing up property.
This also caused a rift within the Foo Fighters and one member had to leave the group forever.
The story goes that guitarist Pat Smear was close friends with Dave’s first wife Jenner Youngblood. Apparently this separation was the breaking point for Pat, who was already feeling exhausted from touring and disagreed with Dave over how he was controlling the group.
“I was so fed up with it. I was so fed up with the whole thing,” Smear recalled in the documentary Foo Fighters: Back and Forth,
He added: “I [didn’t] I want to go on another bazillion show tour and I don’t care. I just [didn’t] I don’t want to do this anymore.”
And so, Dave not only had to deal with a broken marriage, but he also had to fix a broken band. He managed to mend the relationship with Pat, who toured with the band in 2006.
But some lessons are harder to learn than others.
Dave Gohl facing divorce again from second wife
Six years later, Dave married his second wife Jordyn Blum on August 2, 2003, at his home in Los Angeles.
The couple lived in marital bliss for over 20 years. They gave birth to three children, all girls, and Dave looked like a doting father even when he was on tour.
“I used to be on tour nine months out of the year,” he told Time in 2009. “Now I don’t like being away from my kids for more than 12 days.”
Then, on September 10, 2024, he announced that he was the father of a fourth child – but with another woman who is not his wife! Yes, Dave admitted to an affair in a brief, but shocking statement on Instagram.
“I recently became a father to a newborn daughter, born outside of my marriage,” he wrote on Instagram on Tuesday.
“I love my wife and children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and win their forgiveness.”
Now the question is, will his second marriage also end in divorce like his first? The truth is, we don’t know yet. What we can tell you is that until this moment, there has been no talk about Dave divorcing his wife or vice versa. Everything seemed great.
In fact, the pair were last seen together at Wimbledon 2024, looking like the picture of a perfect couple.
Ah, how secrets ruin every love story. Looks like we’ll find out more
