There, he received a melanoma diagnosis. This is a type of skin cancer.
Upon returning to Australia, he was advised by doctors to undergo further testing.
In his December 16 Instagram video, Captain Jason detailed his stage two melanoma diagnosis.
“The Australian doctors, who are fantastic in Australia, were not happy with what they were told,” he shared. “Step two, which will involve cutting out a larger section and examining the glands.”
Stage two melanoma means that the cancerous growth has penetrated more than a mile deep into the skin. This means it is more invasive, and requires extra care in removing it. Especially on the face.
Captain Jason has a warning for ‘Below Deck’ fans
“Look at Australia, two out of three people have melanoma,” he said. “This is a big deal.”
(Worldwide, the highest risk of melanoma is about 1 in 33, not 1 in 3. However, in Australia, the chances are much higher, perhaps estimated at 1 in 17.)
“I never put on sunscreen when I was on the boat,” he said below deck below below Starr accepted.
Captain Jason admitted, “I used to put zinc up my nose, it was because of the chemicals.” Some people worry more about the additives in lotions than the radiation.
“But there are a lot of products out there that are chemical-free now,” he assures, “which is great.”

‘I thought I was resistant’
“For someone who spent her life in the sun, from playing sports as a kid to working in the ocean, I thought I was immune to the harmful effects of the sun,” she confessed in the caption.
Captain Jason expressed: “I love the sun and its health benefits are obvious, but be wise and like everything in life, it’s all about balance, choose your battles.”
He advised: “With the diagnostic melanoma biopsy, I now have an anxious wait and early detection of what I thought was just a blemish of skin in just 6 months is the key.”
