Elon Musk has created a new artificial intelligence company called X.AI Corp, according to a state document in Nevada.

The filing, made last month and reported on Friday by The Wall Street Journal, lists Musk as the sole director of the company and Jared Birchall, the head of Musk’s family office, as his secretary.

X.AI has allowed the sale of 100 million shares of the company, which is privately held.

Last month, Musk warned that the “out-of-control” development of AI could “pose profound risks to society and humanity.”

On Friday, the Financial Times reported that Musk nonetheless began assembling a team of researchers and engineers to work on his AI project.

Musk is also understood to be in talks with investors from Tesla and SpaceX about how to help finance the project, the newspaper said.

Tesla’s chief executive had been linked to discussions about creating a new research lab with people in the field, including Igor Babuschkin, a former employee of Alphabet’s DeepMind, according to the Information technology website.

Musk helped start OpenAI in 2015 and served as co-chair along with Sam Altman, who is the current CEO of OpenAI.

At the time, OpenAI’s goal was to “advance digital intelligence in ways that are most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by the need to generate financial return.” Musk left OpenAI’s board in 2018 and has since criticized the organization, which created a for-profit arm in 2019.

It comes after Musk recently changed Twitter’s official name to X Corp, part of what the billionaire describes as his effort to create an “everything app.”

Musk did not respond to The Wall Street Journal’s request for comment on X.AI.
