“We need them in the stands” “Is this allowed?” – Baltimore Orioles fans react to team debuting ‘Dong Bong’ funnel as their home run celebration
“We need them in the stands” “Is this allowed?” – Baltimore Orioles fans react to team debuting ‘Dong Bong’ funnel as their home run celebration

Home run celebrations on the bench have gotten more and more complex over the years, but the Baltimore Orioles have managed to break new ground.

After Ryan Mountcastle hit a first-inning home run in Monday’s game against the Oakland A’s, he was greeted in the dugout by a device familiar to many college students.

Mountcastle took a long drink from what appeared to be a beer bong, although it was almost certainly not an alcoholic beverage, since it was not a game of bar league softball, in what the Maryland Sports Network dubbed the “Home Run Funnel and the players call a “hydration station”.

En masse, Orioles fans immediately called him “Dong Bong.”

The Dong Bong sent Baltimore Orioles fans to ideas on how to use the device during the long season. Many want the bong to make it to the seating area so attendees can join in the festivities as well.

Baltimore may want to consider the idea of having a “Dong Bong Night” where fans can bring their own homemade drinking gadgets.

We’re not sure that getting milk out of Dong Bong is a good idea. Those Baltimore summers are very oppressive in terms of heat and humidity.

As Ron Burgundy once quipped, “It’s very hot. Milk was a bad choice.”

Unfortunately, not all Orioles fans were fans of the team’s new home run implement. For every frat boy making beer bongs in the party room, there were also college students reading books in the college library.

In general, however, the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. With a number of Orioles fans demanding that the team start selling replica Dong Bongs at Camden Yards, the organization may have a souvenir idea on its hands. Was Frank the Tank from the movie “Old School” a fan of Baltimore? As he famously put it: “Once he hits your lips, he’s so good!”

The Baltimore Orioles are one of the youngest teams in MLB, and they seemed to wake up from a decade-long slumber by advancing to the playoffs last season.

While the team has yet to be eliminated in 2023 – the Orioles were 4-5 entering a three-game series against the visiting Oakland Athletics – there is plenty of optimism in MLB circles that Baltimore will once again compete for the postseason this season.
