“Loud, obnoxious sometimes” – Sydney Thunder head coach’s huge statement on David Warner during BBL 2024-25

Sydney Thunder head coach Trevor Bayliss has offered his opinion on David Warner’s leadership traits in the current edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). Bayliss described the 38-year-old as “loud and obnoxious” but claimed the players loved those qualities.

Warner, who has extensive leadership experience in cricket franchises, replaced Chris Green as captain of the Sydney Thunder for the BBL 2024-25 edition. The Thunder are in the top four and have a real chance to win their first trophy since the 2015-16 season.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Bayliss credited Warner for giving the players a lot of confidence and said the left-hander’s proactivity as captain was his biggest strength. As cited by The Sydney Morning Heraldthe 62-year-old said:

“The job he’s done as captain is not just about his batting, it’s about his personality. He’s always up for it, he’s a positive character. Loud, sometimes obnoxious. But the boys love him.”

“He relates to everyone and, on the field, everyone has confidence that he obviously knows the game and the [tactical] The moves he has made, most of the time, have been good. “He is a proactive captain, proactive captains seem to know what is about to happen and make a change on the field before it happens,” he added.

The new South Welshman is the season’s second highest run-getter with the bat so far, amassing 346 runs in nine innings at 57.66.

Warner also spoke to reporters on Monday and said his job was to raise the players’ intensity on the field. However, the veteran stated that he was a normal person off the field.

“I’ve always told people, ‘If you don’t like me, reach out, I’ll have a beer with you and let you decide for yourself.’ I’m a father, I’m a husband. I’m the captain of this team, but I also have the responsibility to get the guys up,” Warner said (via The Sydney Morning Herald).

“There are times on the field when people play hard, and it’s probably not what people like to see. I’m the person who is in the players’ faces and the cameras are always focused on me. But off the field field, I’m just a normal person,” he added.

The Thunder will face the Melbourne Stars in the knockout clash on January 22.
