Did Elon Musk Just Do a Nazi Salute at Trump’s Inauguration?

Many news organizations have avoided characterizing it as a “Nazi salute”.

However, some members of the alt-right are celebrating what they take to be a move from dogwhistles to open support. And in countries where there are laws against displaying Nazi images, news networks have had to censor Musk’s salute.

How does Elon Musk react to the Nazi salute controversy?

Immediately after Musk’s shocking display, many on social media agreed: He would simply deny that it was a Nazi gesture. During this time he continued to receive praise and support from the Nazis who were excited to see his salute.

After all, we’ve seen it with other alt-right symbols. During Trump’s first term in the White House, many politicians and political groups shared photos of a spontaneous hand gesture that in recent years has come to represent “white power”.

Many conservatives, especially those associated with the alt-right, regard flashing fascist symbols as a “game” that they win by annoying decent people. Under these conditions, they are very good at winning. And of course, Elon Musk is no exception.

“Frankly, they need better dirty tricks,” Elon Musk wrote on Twitter Monday night. “The ‘Everyone is Hitler’ attack is tiring.”

He was quote-tweeting a tweet that included a screenshot of an earlier tweet of his, which predicted a “dirty tricks campaign” against him for supporting far-right politicians in the US and abroad.

Simply put, it appears Musk is laughing as the world responds to his apparent Nazi salute. He seems happy to express admiration for people who like fascist demonstrations, but is also keen to mock what it says in a critical context. The worst of both worlds really.

The divisive era continues in America

While Trump supporters are celebrating this week, millions of Americans are unhappy with the outcome of the 2024 election. But low turnout — a symptom of many things rather than TikTok discouragement or voter suppression alone — didn’t help their cause.

Currently, people who are at risk can take care of each other.

If a trans person and their family need to flee their state to another state with legal protection, help if you can. Remember that ICE cannot enter a home without a warrant signed by a judge. And if you’re horrified by the current agenda don’t forget Vote in 2026 and 2028.

What you can’t do is effectively embarrass Elon Musk online. The man reportedly pays people to play video games in his name so he can claim to be the best in the world at them. Which, in addition to perfectly summing up his history as a businessman and who he is as a person, highlights that Musk is fundamentally shameless.
