The 2025 Oscars need a host, because the person who has been at the helm for most of the last ten years has taken over.
Fans hoping to see him host the Academy Awards next year will be disappointed after Jimmy Kimmel announced in the summer of 2024.
Kimmel is out, and it’s believed the comedian is next in line for the show.
So, who will host the Oscars in 2025? Honestly, we’re spoiled for choice and the latest rumor is that we might be getting not just one, but two hosts next year!
Jimmy Kimmel quits hosting the Oscars
The Late Night star has served as Oscar host four times in the last ten years, including hosting Hollywood’s biggest night in 2017, 2018, 2023 and 2024.
In an interview several months after the last show, Jimmy revealed that he would not return in 2025. Turns out, the program costs a lot.
“I just decided I don’t want to deal with it this year,” Kimmel said.
“Last year it was too much. You put everything off until after the Oscars, and then you have to do everything you promised to do after the Oscars, after the Oscars. i did two years [2017 and 2018]it went well. I did two more years [2023 and 2024]it went well. I thought I should take a break.”

“I’m not good at balancing. I’m really not,” he said.
“It’s not one of my strengths. When it comes to something like the Oscars, I’m all in. I think about it in the morning and at night, and when I have ideas I want to work on them, and then my nightly show feels like a nuisance. We have all the writers on the show working on the Oscars, so it distracts them. It’s fun to do, and it feels good when it goes well, but, for me, doing it for three years in a row was too much.
John Mulaney is also out
After Jimmy Kimmel left hosting the Oscars in 2025, the rumor was that comedian John Mulaney was the next person to approach.
One of the highlights of the 2024 show was John’s ‘Field of Dreams’ bit when presenting the award for Best Sound. Additionally, he also hosted the Governors Awards.
By all accounts, he was a shoo-in. But John turned down the offer citing his busy schedule due to many different projects.
Fingers crossed that means “Everybody in LA” is being renewed by Netflix!

The truth is that the doors are open for some incredible talent to come in and take over the reins. The obvious choices are those who have hosted the show before and can make a victorious return.
Whoopi Goldberg is tied with Kimmel for the number of times she’s hosted the show (again, that’s 4) and since she’s taking a break from The View anyway, she could easily extend the hiatus. (Plus she’s on ABC, so, you know – coordination!
We can also turn to Ellen DeGeneres. She claims she is leaving Hollywood forever after her current stand up tour. What could be a better farewell than performing at the best stand up show in Hollywood! Also, her icon selfie could use an update.
Although both of these could be contenders, here are the top contenders making the rounds at the moment.
Hugh Jackman front runner to host Oscars 2025with ryan reynolds
Hugh previously hosted the Oscars in 2009 and it remains one of the most beloved inaugurations in the show’s history. Plus, he was in half the blockbuster movies of the year deadpool and wolverineChecks a lot of boxes. Maybe this time, he’ll replace Taylor Swift with Beyoncé to perform with him! (No shade towards Bey, just would like to see Taylor like that one time, you know!)
In fact, by rumor deadline The plan is definitely to include both Hugh and Ryan as part of the star group of rotating hosts. But honestly, it can be very confusing. The best thing to do is keep them together or on the Hugh Solo idea.
And it looks like Ryan would like to do that!
“Oscar, yes. It’s something I would really love to do with Hugh,” he told Deadline.
“Yeah, we hosted Kimmel together, but at the time we also kind of had the hit, ‘F**k It,’ we were at the end of a long tour. We traveled to every country around the world and enjoyed every moment of it. And we go to Kimmel, we didn’t even remember the schedule, (as it was) it was so intense on a tour like that. And so we got to Kimmel, and we got loose. And I thought, that was an interesting way to host it. It feels like those old AFI dinners where everyone used to be there, they go back decades and decades to today. And they look just like you’d expect from an Oscar, right? A slightly roasted, slightly loose kind of enjoyable experience. And, you know, I think, it’s becoming more and more difficult for this kind of broadcast Existenceit’s Tricky. So, one day I would love to do that, I don’t know about this year, but One Day, yes.”
Maya Rudolph And Kristen Wiig would be a dream team
Tina Fey and Amy Poeler with the dream team of the 2010s, let’s finally hand it to these two. There is always talk about the ones that were together all the time and their fragments the next morning. Plus, let’s not forget that Maya will be guest starring as Kamala Harris on SNL for the 2024 election. She will be available! (Apple+ – clear their schedule!)
That being said, according to Deadline, Amy Poehler’s name is being tossed around as solo host. She was in the biggest animated film of the year (inside out 2) and he has proven that he is a capable host. But without Tina? Do we all really want this?
Chris Rock: A Triumphant Return?
Think about the headlines! Chris Rock hosted in 2005 and 2016, and he’s as popular as ever, but bringing him back to the crime scene would be a big deal. Meaning, this will be her first return to the Oscars since Will Smith shockingly slapped her while presenting an award in 2022.

The only person to host the Oscars more times than Billy Crystal (9) is Bob Hope (19). And frankly, no one has done it better than Billy. He is a true showman. funny. Musical. Political at exactly the right time. And 9 is such an odd number. Give the guy a good 10 too. Plus, it feels like we need a legend to step up this year. Someone who won’t settle for anything less than telling everyone off the show will be talked about the next day! Now, there is talk that he is too “old” for the program. Nonsense Do you know who has been the best guest host on SNL over the last 20 years? betty white. And by that time he was almost 80 years old!
