(Reuters) – Kentucky police reported an “active shooter situation” on Saturday night near Interstate 75 in London, Kentucky, where “numerous people” were shot in traffic.

The incident began shortly before 6 p.m. (10:00 GMT) about nine miles outside of London, when officers received a call for reports of shots fired at several vehicles on Interstate 75 in Laurel County, several media outlets reported. The shots were said to have come from a wooded area or an overpass.

“Please avoid I-75 in the area of ​​Extension 49. Until further notice! Use an alternate route and do not linger in that area,” London Mayor Randall Weddle said on Facebook (NASDAQ:).

Police officials said the suspect had not been captured.

Kentucky State Trooper Scottie Pennington wrote on Facebook: “The suspect has not been apprehended at this time and we are urging people to stay inside.”

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear wrote on X: “Kentucky, we are aware of a shooting on I-75 in Laurel County. Please avoid the area. We will provide more details when they become available.”
