How to grow cherry trees in Minecraft 1.20 update

While Minecraft’s Trails & Tales update is still some time away from being released, players have been really enjoying its upcoming content. This is courtesy of Java Edition snapshots and Bedrock Edition previews.

One of the more notable inclusions of the update is the cherry tree. This new tree possesses pink leaves and its trunk has a pink interior that results in pink wood blocks when used in crafting.

Since cherry trees offer the ultimate set of wooden blocks in Minecraft, many players are looking for them. Some even start growing their own cherry trees to have a renewable source of cherry wood to work with.

However, if players want to grow their own cherry trees, they will need to know where to find saplings and become familiar with the growing process.

To grow cherry trees in Minecraft, you will need cherry saplings. Fortunately, cherry tree saplings are quite adaptable and can grow in different environments as long as they are rooted in the correct blocks and have a sufficient light level to help them grow.

The trickiest part of growing a cherry tree comes down to growing the first specimen. You’ll need to find cherry trees in Overworld and collect saplings from them to get started.

This is how you can grow cherry trees in Minecraft 1.20 and its snapshots/previews:

  1. As mentioned above, before you do anything else, you’ll need a cherry sapling to plant. To get one without using creative mode or commands, you’ll need to find a cherry tree biome. These biomes can be found at the foot of mountains, just like standard grove biomes, and should be easy to distinguish based on the presence of cherry trees and rose petals. Keep in mind that cherry trees are uncommon compared to other mountain-focused biomes, so you may have to search for quite a while. However, if you are in a hurry, the command “/locate biome” can be useful.
  2. Once you’ve found a cherry tree biome, it’s time to cut down some cherry trees. Doing so will cause the leaf blocks surrounding the trunk to dissipate, eventually resulting in the drop of a cherry sapling.
  3. Pick your cherry sapling and find a suitable place to plant it. Cherry saplings can be planted anywhere as long as it is on top of soil, coarse soil, grass, podzol, or mycelium blocks. Once you’ve found a good spot to plant, simply equip the sapling and right-click on a compatible block or hit the “place block” button on your controller. If you’re on mobile, a simple tap should do the trick.
  4. As long as the sapling has a 5×5 block space area around it and nine space blocks above it, the growth process should continue normally.
  5. If you want to help the tree in the growth process, it’s a good idea to place light sources near the sapling so it has a non-zero light level, even at night. However, the fastest way to stimulate sapling growth in Minecraft is to apply bone meal to it. The process will speed up substantially each time bone meal is used.

It is important to note that the current cherry blossom mechanic in Minecraft is still under development. Changes to trees, their biome, and saplings may be made before the Trails & Tales update is fully released.

At the moment though, the growth process is strongly aligned with how players plant other trees.
