Chelsea close to agreeing surprise deal for Bundesliga midfielder

According to Tutto Mercato, Chelsea are entering the late stages of securing the signing of RB Leipzig midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai. The Italian outlet reports that the Blues may reach a deal for the Hungarian international in the coming days (via Sport Witness).

Although the transfer fee information has yet to be revealed, negotiations are reported to have progressed.

Szoboszlai has been linked with Chelsea since last summer when it was reported that a move was imminent. Leipzig manager Marco Rose was questioned about the possible transfer at a press conference. The German boss declined to comment on mere speculation.

When Szoboszlai was asked the same question, the Hungarian shared a similar opinion. He said (via Sport Witness):

“I have the same answer as the coach. We don’t talk much about speculation. He knows that he is one of our players and that he has to do his best for us. We know that he does everything for the team and he will continue to do so.

Szoboszlai has had a great campaign in Germany this season. The Hungarian midfielder has amassed five goals and 13 assists in 32 appearances in all competitions for Leipzig this season.

However, his contract only expires in the summer of 2026, meaning Chelsea might have to put together a significant offer for the Leipzig midfielder. The Blues certainly have the resources and the will to splurge in the market, as they have shown this season.

Chelsea spent a whopping £323m in the January transfer window alone, signing eight players in the process. The Blues capped an expensive window this winter with a record British fee of £107m to bring in World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.

This was after their £200m+ window last summer when Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took the reins at Chelsea Football Club.

‘It starts with me’: Graham Potter takes responsibility for Chelsea’s poor form and discusses his future at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea currently sit 10th in the Premier League table amid a dismal season for the Blues under Graham Potter. The west London side are arguably experiencing their worst decline since the 2015-16 campaign, when they finished the season in the middle of the table.

The English boss is certainly under fire at the moment. Potter’s future at the club will depend on Chelsea’s result in their next game against Leeds United, according to The Telegraph’s Matt Law. The reporter claimed that Potter could face a similar fate to former Blues manager Thomas Tuchel.

Ahead of a possibly extremely crucial game for the English manager, Potter was asked if he is responsible for the club’s difficulties. He said (via Football London):

“Results are results and the manager is responsible. So we have to improve them. We have to look at the performance of the team and then hopefully you get better results. It’s not an exact science, but it’s the area. As the head coach, you have “You have to take it on your shoulders. It’s a big responsibility. The results haven’t been good enough and we accept that. We have to do better and it starts with me.”
