Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois called out fans of the Spanish soccer club Osasuna for their ‘disgusting chants’ against Vinicius Junior during their 2-0 win on Saturday, February 18.
Despite keeping a crucial clean sheet in Pamplona, Courtois was left shocked and disappointed by the behavior of many fans at the Estadio El Sadar.
During the match, fans directed racist chants towards Brazilian striker Vinicius Junior, 22, of Real Madrid. The situation escalated during the minute of silence before the game when fans called Vinicius “son of b…” and chanted “Vinicius, die.”
According to Courtois, some parents were seen yelling these things with their children next to them. Speaking after the match, he said:
“They called him ‘son of b…’ during the minute of silence, and sang ‘Vinicius, die’. You see parents with his children next to him yelling things at you. You have to stop looking at Vini and look at the people. The atmosphere in these stadiums is great to play, but without this nonsense.”
Courtois was not the only one who defended Vinicius after the game. Sergio Herrera, Osasuna’s goalkeeper, also spoke out in defense of the young Brazilian striker. During the game, Carlo Ancelotti, Nacho and Ceballos also came out to defend their teammate.
Vinicius has been the subject of racist chants during Madrid’s away games this season. Despite the vile behaviour, he has had a fantastic campaign, scoring 16 goals and providing six assists in 33 games.
Current and former Los Blancos players and pundits have urged the Spanish football federation to intervene and issue strict warnings to clubs for such vile behaviour.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti praised the 18-year-old Álvaro Rodríguez after his impressive performance in the 2-0 win against Osasuna.
The young striker proved his worth by playing an important role in the second goal. While he had an assist disallowed for offside, Rodríguez set up Marco Asensio’s goal to seal Real Madrid’s 2-0 win.
