Europe to ChatGPT: disclose your sources

Makers of artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT would be required to disclose copyrighted material used in the construction of their systems, according to new draft European Union legislation that is expected to be the first set full of Western rules governing the deployment of AI.

Such a requirement would give publishers and content creators a new weapon to seek a share of the profits when their works are used as a source of AI-generated content by tools like ChatGPT. The problem has been one of the thorniest business questions to emerge amid a frenzy of AI-powered tools being launched or tested by the likes of Microsoft Corp. and owner of Google Alphabet Inc.
